India’s medal winners of the Chess Olympiad

The 44th Chess Olympiad held in Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai, Tamil Nadu was a successful event organized by the Government of Tamil Nadu, AICF, and FIDE from 28th July to 9th August 2022. Giving a kickstart to the event, PM Narendra Modi launched a torch relay of the Chess Olympiad on 19th June 2022 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi. With the presence of FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, PM Narendra Modi and the former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand from India inaugurated the torch relay event. The 44th Chess Olympiad welcomed teams from 187 countries providing them with all the necessary services and accommodation facilities for a successful event.

 

Indian chess players played wonderfully and clinched various medals in different categories. A bronze medal in the open and women’s section as well as the Gaprindashvili cup was won by the Indian chess players. A total of seven medals were won in individual chess tournaments including two gold, one silver, and four bronze medals. With the combined efforts of Raunak Sadhwani and Nihal Sarin, the Indian B team was able to beat Germany and was able to clench their hands on the bronze medals. Moreover, GM Nihal Sarin was able to show his skills and therefore claimed the prestigious gold medal with an individual score of 7.5. He remained undefeated and therefore was able to showcase his mettle by performing exceptionally and defeating his opponents.

 

GM Dommaraju Gukesh the 16-year-old prodigy from India was also able to win the gold medal in the individual chess competition. With clear eight wins in the individual chess battles, he was able to showcase his best-in-class performance with an overall rating performance of 2869. World’s top players like Fabiano Caruana, Alexei Shirov, and Gabriel Sargissian were defeated by him which enabled him to clinch the gold medal thereby improving his overall score and enabling India to improve its overall rank on the scoreboard. 

 

D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, and Raunak Sadhwani were able to successfully showcase their skills and therefore perform brilliantly at the chess Olympiad. They were able to successfully win the bronze medal in the open section, therefore, enabling India to get their first medal in the Indian chess game section. Powerful countries like Germany and the United States of America were defeated by the 16-year-old chess prodigies.

 

Overall, with the best in class and powerful performance by all the Indian chess players, India was able to achieve the third position with 18 points. All the players were able to showcase their best performance and were able to shine bright. They were able to showcase their chess skills and therefore create a name for India in the field of chess. They were even able to create a benchmark for further chess players who can easily learn chess online and through various other means. With the overall success in terms of organizing the chess Olympiad and obtaining the third position in the Olympiad itself, India was able to successfully create a name for itself through its immense efforts and the perseverance of dedicated Indian chess players.
